Everything you need to know about this Vintage Rug
Ruby Rug is a remarkable creation belonging to the Aït Abdi, part of the Béni M’guild confederation. Its decoration prominently features chevron peaks, with the weaving starting transversely and omitting traditional fringes. The peak, known as “Tazra,” signifies a pearl necklace, while other motifs include “Ighis n’ouslam” (fish bones) and “Sennara ou Tassanart” (hook). The rug’s artistic composition includes zigzag lines called “tit n’sardounte,” creating a melodic visual pattern. The diamonds formed by these lines are referred to as “tadabout,” with some decorated with motifs like “timazzine” (barley grains) and “manchar” (saw). The rich colors, primarily achieved with the madder plant known as “taroubia,” range from deep red to light salmon, with unique mauve shades emerging from the blending of natural and synthetic dyes. The careful dyeing process results in a characteristic “abrache” effect, showcasing the weaver's skill.
