 Charm Rug is a masterpiece woven according to the ancient traditions of the Irklaouen tribe, a significant component of the Béni M’guild confederation. In Irklaouen culture, the decoration of rugs is characterized by motifs that completely fill the field. In this particular piece, the decoration consists of opposing chevron lines, known as “Ili boutkhist,” which translates to “the toothless.”

The diamond-shaped spaces created by these chevrons are adorned with intricate motifs called “Tkkayte ikken” (closed pearl necklace), “Ammou” (darkness), and “Thbayine” (breasts). This rug features three decorated registers, each exhibiting the same motifs but set against different colored backgrounds, with the central register in a lovely mauve hue.

Charm Rug is crafted from premium, sustainably sourced wool, ensuring both comfort and durability. The artisans use time-honored techniques passed down through generations, incorporating natural dyes to achieve vibrant colors. Notably, the weavers of Béni M’guild were pioneers in using synthetic dyes for blue, which leads to the creation of shades like mauve and green. The characteristic “abraches” seen throughout the background of this rug are obtained through a purely random dyeing process. The weavers do not adhere to strict dyeing principles, leading to unique, non-homogeneous shades that create the “abrache” effect during weaving. While they utilize chemical dyes, they continue to use plants for certain colors, such as madder (“Taroubia”) for reds and salmon, and sumac (“Tizra”) for pale yellow and green. For white, they use the natural color of undyed wool. The weaving and knotting of this rug are executed with Amazigh “Akrouss” knots on two warp threads known as “ousto.” Successive rows of knots, “abrid ikroussen,” are separated by two weft threads called “awaye.”
